Disclaimer Item Number: SS0037

Description: A very fine enamel on copper of a Cavalier standing proud in front of a purple curtain in his gold embroidered red Damask jacket and pants with gleaming white lace cuffs and ruffled collar. A wide rimed black hat, black stockings and shoes with large black bows completes the fineries of this gentleman. He is standing with his left foot slightly forward and his left arm arrogantly braced on his hip. His right arm is extended, firmly holding the gilded hilt of a long rapier still sheathed with its point resting on the floor. To counteract his defiant stance, a few roses are strewn about his feet and a view into a garden compliment the scene. In modern frame. Circa 19th century.

Historical Note:  This Enamel is after a painting of a Cavalier by Franz Hall (1580-1666), a famous Dutch portrait painter of 17th century. The only difference is that in the original painting the Cavalier wears a black costume. The works of Franz Hall are exhibited mainly in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, but examples of his work can be found in most of the Museums and important collections throughout the world.
